Emma Watson and Rupert Grint No. 1 on List of Top-Earning On-Screen Couples

Harry Potter actors Rupert Grint and Emma Watson top the list for Hollywood’s top-earning on-screen couples, with four movies released in the past five years earning $4.2 billion at the box office, Forbes reports.

Forbes used data from Box Office Mojo to count box office earnings for actors and actresses who appeared as romantic couples in movies in the past five years.

In a distant second on the list is Twilight’s Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, who play Bella and Edward in the big-screen franchise. Their box office intake in the last half-decade is $2.5 billion worldwide. With the final movie, Breaking Dawn Part 2, yet to be released, the on-screen duo have a shot at drastically boosting their box office total.

At No. 3 is Transformers’ Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, who appeared in the first two movies together, raking in $1.5 billion. Fox was replaced in the most recent film, Dark of the Moon, with Rosie Huntington-Whitely, which did not count toward their box office total.

Fourth went to Iron Man’s Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, who star as Tony Stark and girlfriend Pepper Potts. The first two Iron Man films made $1.2 billion at the box office.

The fifth slot went to LaBeouf and Huntington-Whitely with $1.1 billion. Rounding out the top 10: Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, $1 billion), Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean, $963 million), Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man, $890 million), Leonardo DiCaprio and Marion Cotillard (Inception, $825 million) and Sarah Jessica Parker and Chris Noth (Sex and the City, $703 million).

Harry Potter aims for Oscar glory
2 January, 2012 · Posted by under Harry Potter · No Comments

In the decade since they launched, the Harry Potter films have become the most successful cinema franchise in history.
The eight films have turned Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint into global superstars and have spawned countless imitations.

However critical acclaim and combined box office receipts of around £5 billion have not brought the one thing that the boy wizard really wants – an Oscar.

But now the makers of the Harry Potter films have launched a campaign to have the final instalment recognised at the Academy Awards, ending a 10-year snub in the major awards categories.

Despite breaking box office records, the wizarding adventures have been overlooked by the Academy year after year.

In one last push to right the perceived wrong Warner Bros, the studio behind the films, is lobbying Academy voters to nominate Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in a dozen categories including best picture and best director for David Yates, who has directed the last four Harry Potter films.

Warner Bros is also hoping to break the spell by lobbying for Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson to be nominated in the best actor and actress categories respectively.

The most likely chance of success comes in the best supporting actor category with Alan Rickman’s performance as Professor Severus Snape.

Radcliffe, who plays Potter, has added his voice to the campaign for Rickman. He said: “I don’t think there is going to be another performance from an actor in a supporting role that is so powerful.”

Hollywood studios spend big money on campaigning during Oscars season.

Warner Bros has set up a ‘For Your Consideration’ website for the final Harry Potter film, which charts the wizard’s final victory over the forces of evil.

The studio is running special trailers and advertising campaigns in the film’s honour. The ballot closes on January 13 and the nominations will be announced on January 24.

To date, the Harry Potter films have been nominated for nine Oscars but have failed to win any. The categories for which the films have been nominated include best art direction, best score and best cinematography. While these are all hard-fought categories, they are outside the ‘big five’ categories that are the true mark of Oscar glory: best picture, best director, best actor, best actress and best screenplay.

The films have fared slightly better at UK awards ceremonies. Last year the series was awarded a BAFTA for outstanding contribution to cinema. The award was collected by the books’ author JK Rowling.

Warner Bros will be hoping that the Harry Potter franchise repeats the Oscars success seen by the Lord of the Rings trilogy last decade. Those films, based on the novels of JRR Tolkien, got off to a slow start at the Academy Awards.

The first two films in the trilogy – The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers – won only minor awards at the Oscars. However the third instalment, The Return of the King, swept the board in 2004, winning 11 awards including best picture and best director for Peter Jackson. The statue haul made The Return of the King only the third ever film to win 11 Oscars, along with Titanic and Ben Hur.

Despite its campaign, Warner Bros faces some stiff competition at next month’s Oscars.

The Artist, a silent film backed by mogul Harvey Weinstein, is attracting a loud ‘Oscar buzz’ in Hollywood, while Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris and The Descendants, starring George Clooney, are also tipped.

The best director category is expected to include three of Hollywood’s biggest hitters: Martin Scorsese for the film Hugo, Steven Spielberg for War Horse, and Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life.

MSN Movies hangs out with Rupert Grint
16 October, 2011 · Posted by under News, Rupert · No Comments

There are several reasons why Rupert Grint is by far the coolest out of the Harry Potter kids and, after hanging out with him to talk about The Making Of Harry Potter tour, I feel it’s only polite to share them with you.

Firstly, he has achieved what millions across the globe can only dream of… he has his very own ice cream van! You can’t get much cooler than driving a vehicle with its very own sub-zero refrigerating system in it. In our exclusive interview (which will be available online in the next few weeks) Rupert proudly admitted that he still owns his famous ice cream van and he even happily answered the genius fan question: “If you were an ice cream, what would you be and why?” We know some movie stars who would have stormed off in a diva-fit after hearing such a query, but Rupert laughed as he answered (and no, we’re not telling you what he said… yet!)

Rupert also has some really cool friends, including musician of the moment Ed Sheeran. Rupert is a regular at the singer’s concerts and he’s even starring in Ed’s music video for his single Lego House. The ex-Potter star even admitted to us that he always wanted to be in a band – could a music career be on the cards for Rupert? You’ll have to wait for the interview to find out…

The coolest thing about Rupert though was that he was just so down-to-earth – chatting to him was like talking to a laid-back mate at my local pub. He also looked effortlessly stylish, wearing a worn out pair of Converse trainers and an indie-looking t-shirt and he was happy to pose for no less than three photos with me after my camera-phone decided to play up in a typical fashion. Now, that’s really nice, considering you’ve got a better chance of bumping into Elvis in Atlantis than getting a single picture with most movie stars.

For now, we’ll have to leave you with this brief insight into what it was like hanging out with Rupert Grint, but you’ll be able to feast your eyes on the full video interview later on in the month…

Rupert Grint Wins BBC Teen Awards
11 October, 2011 · Posted by under Awards, Rupert · No Comments

Rupert Grint always pleases fans with his hilarious portrayal of Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies. Now, Grint is finally getting a little recognition from another source: the BBC. He came away from the 2011 BBC Teen Awards with the title of Best British Actor.

As usual, Rupert Grint was modest and down to earth. His first reaction to winning the award was, “I’m just the ginger one in the background, this shouldn’t be happening!” Really, though, it should have happened a long time ago. Grint has long been a favorite among Harry Potter fans, some of whom are much less enthusiastic about Grint’s costar, Daniel Radcliffe.

Now that Harry Potter is all wrapped up, Grint is on to new projects. He’ll be in an upcoming movie version of the animated TV series Postman Pat. Rumor also has it that Grint will be showing up in an Ed Sheeran music video. No matter what he pursues next, Rupert Grint’s career is not likely to end with the Harry Potter movies.

Rupert will star on Ed Sheeran ‘Lego House’ video

Ed Sheeran has revealed that Rupert Grint will star in his new music video.

Sheeran, who is currently shooting the promo for his new single ‘Lego House’, will be played by the Harry Potter actor in the clip.

Speaking to Digital Spy at the Radio 1 Teen Awards, Sheeran said: “We got an actor to play me in the video. We’ve already filmed half of it and the final bits are being shot next week.”

Grint later confirmed: “Ed Sheeran supports the gingers! We’ll be doing something in the video. I don’t think I can say too much about it, but it’s going to be very cool.”

The ‘A Team’ singer recently claimed that his ginger hair has been part of his mainstream success, adding: “People like to talk about the fact that I’m ginger. It’s a hair colour, it’s not like I’m diseased but I embrace it.”

‘Lego House’ marks the third release from his debut album +, which topped the charts last month.
